generalGeorgia Smith, a representative of the Foundation, recently met with Joanne Ramsay and the team at Berkshire Healthcare Charity, one of the beneficiaries of our Summer 2025 funding round.
Berkshire Healthcare Charity’s grant supports the installation of a RITA (Reminiscence Interactive Therapy Activities) unit on Jubilee Ward at Upton Hospital.
This innovative digital therapy system is designed to enhance the wellbeing of elderly and dementia patients through personalised reminiscence activities.
During the visit, they explored how the RITA unit is set to transform care on the ward. The touchscreen system enables patients to access music, films, games, and life story features tailored to each individual’s history and preferences. It provides comfort, connection, and mental stimulation.
“We’re incredibly grateful for this funding,” said Joanne Ramsay, Charity Manager. “RITA is already making a difference within other trusts. Patients are calmer, more engaged, and staff are able to deliver more personalised care. It is a small change that will make a big impact.”
The initiative addresses key challenges in dementia care, including agitation, isolation, and cognitive decline. By engaging patients in familiar and meaningful activities, RITA helps reduce anxiety, improve mood, and encourage social interaction. More than 200 patients each year are expected to benefit from the project.
Staff at Upton Hospital have already noted a positive shift in the ward atmosphere and a reduction in the need for one to one supervision. Carers and families have also praised the system for helping maintain dignity and memory during hospital stays.
This grant marks the beginning of a wider ambition to introduce RITA units across Berkshire’s community hospitals, improving dementia care throughout the region.
