generalGabriel Cusato, member of the Foundation committee, recently met with Michelle Bowdidge, Head of Fundraising and Communications, and Tina Fullbrook, Head of Care, at The Rose Road Association.
The Rose Road Association is a local charity we supported in our last funding round. It provides specialist respite care for children and young people with complex disabilities, offering a safe and nurturing environment where they feel secure and supported, while giving their families the opportunity to rest.
Our funding will allow the replacement of a Safe Space Travel Pod, creating a calm, enclosed and protective sleeping environment for children who are unable to sleep safely in standard or hospital-style beds. Many of the children have complex needs, including seizures, PICA, high anxiety, challenging behaviours and requirements for oxygen monitoring. For some, feeling fully enclosed is essential to helping them settle and sleep.
Rose Road currently has two permanent Safe Space beds which are used almost every night, totalling around 542 nights per year. A third portable Safe Space Travel Pod was previously available but is now old, incomplete and no longer fit for use. There are at least 12 children who attend respite regularly and require access to a Safe Space bed, but this need cannot currently be met.
By funding a replacement Safe Space Travel Pod, we will help ensure more children can sleep safely, calmly and comfortably during their stay at Rose Road, improving wellbeing for both the children and the care team who support them.
