Harish Balachandar and Georgia Smith, representatives of the Foundation, recently met with Hayley King, Founder at Cianna’s Smile, one of the organisations awarded funding in our Winter 2025 round.

Cianna’s Smile is a charity dedicated to raising awareness of sickle cell, the UK’s fastest growing genetic condition, and supporting young people and families affected by it. Our funding will benefit up to 30 children and young people aged 11 to 18 across the Thames Valley and surrounding areas who are living with or affected by sickle cell, many of whom experience isolation, anxiety or low confidence.

The grant will enable the delivery of eight full day creative workshops, creating a safe and supportive space where young people feel seen, heard and able to connect with others who share similar experiences.

Hayley founded the charity following her daughter’s diagnosis with sickle cell anaemia. Through discussion, she highlighted that the challenges extend far beyond the condition itself. A lack of understanding can lead to stigma, making it difficult for families to speak openly and access support. Many also face financial pressures as parents balance care with work during emotionally and physically demanding periods.

As the only charity in the country focused specifically on young people with sickle cell anaemia, Cianna’s Smile provides vital support, from food assistance to creating engaging resources that help children better understand their condition. Hayley’s determination and positivity are truly inspiring, and we are proud to support her mission to create a brighter future for the children and families affected.
